“Why is not everyone aware?” That’s my husband’s question. He’s been hyperaware of things in his environment (sights, sounds, smells, tastes, textures, feelings) since he was a child. Someone told him once about ESP, and it just seemed to him to be another term for the awareness he had always been connected to. It’s like you can see farther “than the eye can see” in a lot of different ways.
His observations got me to thinking more about this awareness state and feeling into it myself. I like to think of it as one mind-and-heart state, not just a collection of separate physical senses. There’s an aspect that goes beyond just the body’s senses to an awareness of . . . energy fields, maybe, that pulls matter and energy together.
I find a kind of comfort in being in the world when I stop to tune into this awareness of everything at once. I can hear the rain, the hum of an automobile; I can see the forms of the letters on the screen as I type; I can smell the barberry scent from a candle or taste the remnants of water from my last sip; I can touch the soft fibers of cashmere on my sweater. But this awareness is also of the sadness of a friend at the end of a relationship, the joy of morning coffee with friends, and the full spectrum of energy from a star I saw this morning.
I feel a special pause when I step into this awareness. I sense the possibility of miracles. I notice. I get to be still. I am connected. I am centered.
I can begin from right here to choose something new because I have paused to be aware.
Awareness brings everything into focus and reveals its perfection.
Pause for a moment, then, and tune in.
